The Winchburgh Development
The Winchburgh Development
At Winchburgh the new town centre is to be centrally located adjacent to the existing village, the new rail station, park and ride and new bus route will be focused around new urban squares and spaces which will provide a stimulating and enjoyable outdoor space for the people of Winchburgh.
The extension of Winchburgh is one of the most exciting urban community projects planned in Scotland today. The 3,450 homes, employment space, supporting community facilities and transport connections present a unique opportunity to breathe life into Winchburgh and this part of West Lothian. The quality and imaginative designs for this space are truly distinctive and offer a wide variety of living environments to cater for all tastes and style preferences.
This ambitious plan is firmly driven by quality and environmental consideration in order to deliver the ‘ultimate’ living space for the community and commerce there.
An estimated growth in population of around 8,000 will mean that Winchburgh will be the enviable home to between 10-12,000 people.
As Winchburgh grows, it s energy, inspiration and design will make the location THE place to live and work in West Lothian and beyond. Everyday life and journeys will be characterised by a new town centre, thriving with shops, a new health centre, civic uses and tourist attractions, as well as being close to the new co-
located secondary schools, which will serve the whole of West Lothian.
Respect for the very best of the local landscape’s intrinsic qualities will ensure that there is a seamless transition between old and new development, and across rural and urban locations. The significant woodlands and open spaces proposed will be accessible to the public, providing a strong and attractive setting for people to live their lives, and by doing so helping to stitch the whole community and space together.
Of course the improvement of the existing village is just as important as new housing to the success and growth of the settlement. Making better use of underused gap sites in the village – like that opposite the Post Office – and considering the potential to further regenerate and enhance Glendevon Park is part of this masterplan’s strength in stimulating new opportunities. The inherent flexibility of the development framework contained within the Masterplan will allow the potential for such opportunities to be seized.
